The First Step Is The Initial Breakthrough

Why do we struggle with the decision to jumpstart a new business idea that we’ve imagined and awaited to bring into fruition? Or maybe a career change you’ve been contemplating, and believe it’s in your best interest. In many aspects of life, that first step can be daunting and emotionally overwhelming when starting something new or challenging.

Now, let’s ask ourselves WHY?

“I have a solid plan to align my business idea with my passion and potentially change my life… Why am I procrastinating?”

When feeling discombobulated about making the first step to create a new reality, our mind keeps us away from the positive outcomes that could potentially happen. When outcomes are unknown, our mind becomes a jungle of thoughts. We create negative illusions of potential outcomes, triggering an emotional response. As a result, we fail to reach a conclusion and… BEGIN. Engaging our mind in negative thinking leads us into a rabbit hole filled with undesirable thoughts and emotions. We become unsure, incapable, insecure, and weak. Even when capable, we believe we are not by accepting negative thinking. Making a brave decision in a negative state of mind rarely leads to a positive outcome. On the other hand, while negative thinking provokes stagnancy, positive thinking provokes forward movement. Our mind now is in a different landscape; thoughts filled with the proper gas needed to fuel our emotions with desire to make it all happen… The first step.

Now let’s think about this for a moment. The unknown can be frightening; like owning a successful company and BOOM! Covid-19 causes a pandemic ready to take you out of business. Uncertainty lingers and there’s no clue what the future now holds for the company. The unknown can be chaotic, akin to a spouse breaking your trust after falling in love. You want to stay becasue the love is strong, but you want to leave because the trust no longer exist. HOWEVER, despite the complexities of the unknown, what an amazing feeling to overcome yourself, approach your goals with belief, and take that first step with faith. The first step is contagious and influencial. This act of courageousness will inspire others to find it within themselves to embark on their very own new beginnings. Most importantly, the first step highlights leadership. A leader inspires those around him/her to act, learn, and grow. But, to lead others we must first lead ourselves.

StoryTime

Soon after dropping out of college in 2016, I worked at United Airlines from 2016 to 2020 as a customer service agent. During this time, I was traveling the world discovering new experiences, new environments, and new versions of myself. That was the reason I left school a semester before graduation; I didn’t know myself and what I wanted to do with my life after college. Fast forward to the end of 2019, I was becoming uncomfortable. I remained a customer service agent for 4 years, no movement, no higher positions, maybe annual pay raises, but, the tradeoff was free travel around the world. The discomfort of stagnancy became a burden I could not disregard. My soul yearned entrepreneurship. I was contemplating leaving my job, starting my own business, and generating my own source of income. I was familiar with that lifestyle. Early on during my childhood, every winter when there was a snow storm, my mother would encouraged me to make some money shoveling the neighborhood. I remember the first time I made over $200 shoveling house after house until sunlight cracked the grey skies. I was 12 years old when I started my first seasonal business shoveling and charged $20 per house. I never forgot the feeling of reaping the fruits of my own labor. Anyways, I delayed leaving my job. I had developed a business idea, a goal, and a plan of action. After some time, I was finally ready to take that leap of faith. I arrived at my decision to leave my job and pursue my own business. Shortly after the fact, I found myself in a situation where my boss is now giving me an ultimatum that would cost me my job. Or should I say the situation found me. “Should I stay or should I leave?” My decision was made. I leaped! I started my fitness business, experienced growth, and I never looked back. Hindsight, it was the best decision for me and I was proud of my ability to overcome myself and take the first step in a new direction.

The first step is the initial breakthrough, and I say this with conviction. It is the internal process that occurs beforehand. The internal battle of the outcome; “What if I fail? What if I succeed?” The stories our imaginations tell, the illusion we choose to accept. The initial breakthrough arises from the mayhem of our mind, which can become our worst enemy. The initial breakthrough is the battle that exists within, holding us hostage away from our greatness. The initial breakthrough is YOU!

After years of contemplation, I decided to pave the way for my writing, offering valuable insights to those who may benefit. My first step was publishing this very article to over 100 million users here on Medium and beginning my writing journey. The first step into the unknown is most gratifying, depending on the view you embody. Embrace it. On the bright side, we’ve conquered the fear and doubt of uncertainty to achieve greatness that awaits us.

Cheers to YOU!
